Appenzell Innerrhoden holds a Landsgemeinde each April: citizens gather in the square, carry a sword or ceremonial dagger as proof of citizenship, and vote by show of hands, in one of the last open-air assemblies in Europe — women were admitted only in 1991, by federal court order. The painted façades and the alpine cheese are the rest of it.
