Deruta
Majolica Hillside
Portrait
Deruta has made tin-glazed maiolica since the fourteenth century, and its lustreware — with a metallic sheen achieved in a third firing — was exported across Renaissance Europe; around two hundred workshops still operate in a town of nine thousand. The ceramics museum holds the largest public collection, and the technique is taught rather than reconstructed.
