Francis was the son of a cloth merchant here and gave away his inheritance in the town square in 1206; the basilica raised over his grave was frescoed by Giotto and Cimabue within a century of his death. Stay overnight after the coaches leave, walk up to the Rocca for the Umbrian plain, and take the hour out to the Eremo delle Carceri where he actually withdrew.
