Fabriano
Eight Centuries of Paper
Portrait
Fabriano's papermakers, working from the twelfth century, introduced the water-powered stamping mill, animal gelatine sizing and the watermark — three innovations that made European paper better than the Arab and Chinese versions and cheap enough to carry printing. The paper museum runs the medieval vats, and the mills still supply banknote stock.
