Urbino
The Ducal Study
Portrait
Federico da Montefeltro, a mercenary commander who lost an eye and part of his nose in a tournament and is therefore always painted in profile, built a palace here that Castiglione used as the setting for The Book of the Courtier — the manual of Renaissance manners. His studiolo is panelled in trompe-l'œil marquetry, and Raphael was born a few streets away.
