Portrait

The Church of the Nativity is the oldest church in continuous use in the Christian world, built in 339 over a cave venerated as the birthplace, and the Greek Orthodox, Armenian and Catholic clergy who share it argue over centimetres of floor. Enter through the metre-high Door of Humility, and note the separation wall a few streets away: this is a working Palestinian city, not a nativity set.
