Four knights killed Thomas Becket at the altar in 1170 after Henry II asked aloud who would rid him of this turbulent priest; within three years Becket was a saint and Canterbury one of Europe's great pilgrimage destinations, which Chaucer wrote into English literature. The spot is marked by a floor stone and a sculpture of swords.
