John is held to have received the Revelation in a cave on the slope below the town, and the monastery of Saint John was fortified above it in 1088 against pirates rather than against armies. UNESCO inscribed the cave, the monastery and the whole hilltown together in 1999, which is unusual — normally one building carries the listing and the town around it does not.
