Corfu

Venice held Corfu for four hundred years and planted the olive groves that still cover it; the old town's tall shuttered houses and arcaded Liston were built to Italian and French patterns, not Aegean ones. Read the island from its fortresses outward, and go north to Paleokastritsa or south to Korission lagoon for the coast the package holidays never reached.
