Fiskardo / Kefalonia

The earthquake of August 1953 levelled almost every settlement on Kefalonia and this one at the northern tip was left standing, which is why its Venetian houses in ochre and pink are the only original ones on the island and every other village is a reconstruction. Geologists put it down to the rock beneath rather than to luck, and the village has traded on the difference ever since.
