Hydra

Hydra has banned wheeled vehicles since 1950 — no cars, no scooters, no bicycles — so everything that arrives at the port is carried up the stone lanes by mule or by hand, including furniture and building materials. The island grew rich as a shipping power during the Napoleonic blockade, built the stone mansions that ring the harbour, and then stopped, which is why the town looks the way it does.
