Bermuda has no fresh water source, so every roof is stepped, painted with limewash and plumbed to a tank — the white roofs are a water system, not a style. The island sits a thousand kilometres from anywhere, was settled by a shipwrecked English fleet in 1609, and Hamilton is one of the world's significant insurance centres.
