Sponge Money in Neoclassical Stone
Iconic VillagesSeaside Resorts
Portrait

Sponge diving made this harbour rich enough in the nineteenth century to build several hundred neoclassical houses up both sides of a steep amphitheatre, and the trade collapsed within a generation. Nothing was built over them afterwards, so the harbour reads as a single moment held still — the rarest thing a working port can offer.
