Thessaloniki took in Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 and became the only major European city with a Jewish majority for four centuries, until almost the entire community — some fifty thousand people — was deported to Auschwitz in 1943. The Byzantine churches above the waterfront, listed by UNESCO, span a thousand years of building.
