Loggerhead turtles have nested on the bay south of the town for longer than the town has stood, and since 1999 a national marine park has closed those sands at night through the season and capped the boats by day. The town itself was rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake to its own former plan, which is rarer than rebuilding and harder.
