The fort was built in 1156 on a ridge in the Thar desert and remains inhabited — one of very few living forts anywhere, with houses, temples and shops inside the walls — which is also its problem: modern water supply has saturated the foundations and sections have collapsed. The sandstone turns from gold to honey as the sun moves.
