Conwy
The Iron Ring
Portrait
Edward I spent the equivalent of a national budget on eight castles to subdue Gwynedd after 1283, and Conwy — built in four years by a Savoyard architect with a walled town attached — is the most complete, with its curtain wall of 1,300 metres and twenty-one towers still ringing the streets. The English town inside was closed to the Welsh for two centuries.
