Jiayuguan is the last fort of the Ming wall, built in 1372 in a gap between two mountain ranges, and beyond it was the barbarian west — officials sent into exile passed through this gate and traditionally threw a stone at the wall, believing that if it bounced back they would return. An overhanging section of wall climbs the ridge above.
