Duino / Sistiana

Rilke was walking the cliff path below the castle in January 1912 when the first line of the Duino Elegies arrived, by his own account against a bora strong enough to lean on; the path carries his name and the work took ten years. The bay at Sistiana below is a limestone quarry worked until the 1980s and rebuilt afterwards as a marina, a second life the coast does not advertise.
