The White Rock
Portrait
A farmer turned up the Venus de Milo in a field here in 1820 and the French bought her within weeks; she has been in the Louvre ever since and the island has the empty niche. At Sarakiniko the volcanic tuff has been scoured white and smooth enough that people walk it barefoot, which no other Aegean shore offers.
