Herculaneum
The Buried Villas
Gateway town: Naples
Portrait
Herculaneum was sealed not by ash but by twenty metres of pyroclastic mud, which carbonised wood instead of burning it: doors, beds, roof beams and a boathouse of skeletons survive where Pompeii kept only walls. Two hours cover the site, and they teach more about Roman domestic life than a day among the larger ruins next door.
