Sorrento sits on a tufa shelf fifty metres above its own marinas, which is why the town has staircases instead of a beach and lemon terraces instead of fields. Base yourself here instead of the Amalfi Coast itself: ferries reach Capri in twenty minutes, the Circumvesuviana serves Pompeii, and the evening passeggiata on Via San Cesareo belongs to residents.
