Pompeii

Frozen in Ash
Lost Cities & Ruins
Gateway town: Naples
Collections: The Grand Tour
Portrait

Vesuvius buried Pompeii under four metres of pumice in AD 79, sealing bakeries with bread in the ovens, election slogans on the walls and graffiti at eye height in the side streets. Come through Porta Marina at opening and walk the Via dell'Abbondanza first, before the coaches: the town reads as a street plan, not a ruin, and that is the whole difference.
