Amalfi
The Maritime Republic
Portrait
Amalfi was an independent republic with its own navy and maritime code by the ninth century, richer than Pisa or Genoa, until a storm and a shifting seabed destroyed most of the lower town in 1343. What remains is a cathedral of Arab-Norman stripes above a square of lemon stalls, and a coast road engineered in 1852 that is still one of Europe's great drives.
