The Maddalena archipelago is sixty-odd granite islands in the eleven-kilometre strait between Sardinia and Corsica, wind-scoured into shapes that have their own names, and only two of them are inhabited. It was an Italian naval base until 1972 and then an American one until 2008, which kept it closed and undeveloped; Garibaldi lived out his last years on Caprera, one island across, and is buried there.
