The First Capital
Portrait
Nara was the capital from 710 to 784, the first time the court stopped relocating on each emperor's death, and Todaiji's Great Buddha Hall holds a seated bronze figure fifteen metres high that consumed most of Japan's copper. The deer in the park, over a thousand of them, were considered messengers of the gods and killing one was a capital offence until 1637.
