Lamu has been continuously inhabited for over seven hundred years and has almost no vehicles — the lanes are too narrow, so donkeys and boats carry everything, and there are more donkeys than cars by a wide margin. The Swahili architecture of coral stone, carved doors and inner courtyards is the most complete surviving anywhere on the East African coast.
