George Town / Penang
Crossroads of Flavour
Portrait
George Town was a free port from 1786, and Malay, Chinese, Indian and Peranakan communities settled in adjacent streets — which is why a walk of ten minutes passes a Chinese clan jetty, a Tamil temple, a mosque and a Georgian church. The food is the result: char kway teow, assam laksa and nasi kandar are all local, and the hawker stalls are a serious matter.
