Lanterns of a Trading Port
Portrait
Japanese, Chinese and Dutch merchants traded here from the fifteenth century until the Thu Bồn river silted and the business moved to Da Nang, leaving the town too poor to rebuild — which is why its wooden shophouses, assembly halls and the Japanese covered bridge of 1593 survive intact. Lanterns are lit and electric light switched off on the fourteenth night of each lunar month.
