North Malé Atoll

Kurumba opened here in 1972 as the first resort in the Maldives, and the arrangement it improvised — one island, one hotel — became national practice rather than a local habit. Arrival is by speedboat or seaplane from Velana, twenty minutes to an hour depending on the island, and that transfer is the first thing a guest buys and the last thing anyone forgets.
