The grachtengordel was laid out from 1613 as one project — four concentric canals with plots sold to fund the works, taxed by width, which is why the houses are narrow and tall with hoisting beams at the top. The city stands on wooden piles driven into peat, and the Rijksmuseum alone holds around eight thousand objects from the century that paid for it.
