Christchurch
The Garden City Reborn
Portrait
Christchurch was the most English city outside England — punts on the Avon, a Gothic cathedral, a grid of gardens — until February 2011, when an earthquake killed 185 people and destroyed the centre. What stands now is a city arguing with itself about what to rebuild: a cardboard cathedral, transitional architecture, and the Botanic Gardens unchanged through all of it.
