The Manila galleons carried Chinese silk to Acapulco and Mexican silver back for two and a half centuries, making this the hinge of the first global trade route. Intramuros, the Spanish walled city, was destroyed in 1945 in a battle that killed perhaps a hundred thousand civilians — one of the worst urban destructions of the war — and has been partly reconstructed.
