Toruń was a Teutonic Order town and a Hanseatic port, and it came through the war unbombed, so its brick Gothic — the town hall, the churches, the burghers' houses — stands complete. Copernicus was born here in 1473, and the gingerbread guild has worked since the fourteenth century using moulds carved with the town's own scenes.
