Girona's Call was one of the most important Jewish communities in medieval Iberia and produced the kabbalist Nachmanides; after the expulsion of 1492 the quarter was sealed and built over, which preserved its lanes almost unchanged. The cathedral has the widest Gothic nave in the world at twenty-three metres, and its ninety-one steps have appeared in enough television to be recognisable.
