Portrait

Isaac Levitan spent three summers here from 1888 and painted the works that fixed the Volga in Russian visual memory — Evening Bells, Golden Plyos, Above Eternal Peace — in a town of two thousand people with wooden houses on a steep bank. His house is a museum, and the view from Cathedral Hill is the one he painted.
