Jeddah
Red Sea Gateway
Portrait
Jeddah has been the port of arrival for pilgrims since the seventh century, and the old town of Al-Balad was built from Red Sea coral blocks with wooden rawashin screens that let air through and keep eyes out. The city was Saudi Arabia's most open long before the reforms, and its corniche carries a sculpture collection including Moore, Miró and Calder.
