Quanzhou
Emporium of the World
Portrait
Quanzhou was the eastern terminus of the maritime Silk Road and, in the Song and Yuan periods, probably the busiest port on earth — Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta both described it in those terms. Its mosque of 1009, Hindu temple carvings and Manichaean statue survive from that cosmopolitanism, and the harbour silted while Guangzhou and Shanghai took the trade.
