Saint-Louis
Jazz on the Senegal
Portrait
Founded in 1659 on an island in the Senegal river, Saint-Louis was the capital of French West Africa until 1902, and its wooden-balconied colonial houses stand on a grid connected to the mainland by a Eiffel-designed iron bridge of 1865. The jazz festival each May is the biggest in West Africa, and the fishing quarter on the spit is the town's other life.
