The Mask Dance Village
Iconic VillagesSacred Cities
Portrait

Hahoe means enveloped by water: the Nakdong river loops around the village, which has been held by the Ryu clan for six centuries and still has thatched servants' houses and tiled yangban mansions in their original relationship. The mask dance performed here was a licensed annual mockery of the nobility and the clergy by the people who served them.
