The Tabernas desert is the only true desert in continental Europe, and from 1960 it stood in for Arizona, Mexico and the Wild West — Leone shot the Dollars trilogy here, Lawrence of Arabia used the coast, and around two hundred films were made in the province. Three western towns still stand and operate as sets and attractions.
