Philip II moved the court here in 1561 from Toledo, choosing a small town near the geographic centre of Iberia precisely because it belonged to no established power — the capital was to depend on the crown alone. The Prado holds what the Habsburgs and Bourbons bought, which is why Velázquez, Titian and Bosch are here in quantity rather than in Italy.
