Tarraco was the capital of Rome's largest Spanish province and the first Roman settlement on the peninsula, and its circus runs beneath the old town — vaults and passages emerge in the basements of houses and can be walked. The amphitheatre sits on the beach, and a Roman aqueduct of two tiers stands in woodland outside the city.
