The Pallava kings cut monolithic temples out of granite outcrops here in the seventh century — five rathas, each a complete building carved from one rock and each in a different architectural style, apparently as experiments. Arjuna's Penance is a relief thirty metres long on two boulders, with a natural cleft used as a river down which carved elephants and ascetics face.
