A Swiss doctor built a sanatorium on this plateau in 1896 because it faces south at 1,500 metres and gets exceptional sun, and the resort grew from his patients. It has hosted the Omega European Masters golf tournament since 1923 on a course at altitude where the ball flies noticeably further, and the view runs across the Rhône valley to the Matterhorn.
