The International Olympic Committee has been based in Lausanne since 1915, when Coubertin moved it here for Swiss neutrality during the war, and around sixty sports federations followed. The city climbs five hundred metres from the lakeshore, with a metro that is effectively a funicular, and the Lavaux vineyard terraces run east along the water.
