Damascus has been inhabited for perhaps eleven thousand years, and the Street Called Straight, named in Acts, still runs through the old city as a covered souk. The Umayyad Mosque of 715 was built on a Roman temple that had been a church, and its walls still carry a Greek inscription from that phase above a doorway.
