The Andaman karst reaches its most theatrical here: railay is a peninsula reachable only by longtail boat, with vertical limestone that made it one of the world's climbing destinations in the 1990s. Ao Nang or Railay beat Krabi Town as a base, and the four-island boat is best taken early, before the day trips from Phuket arrive.

Why go

Limestone towers standing in shallow sea — the Andaman karst at its most theatrical. Railay — a peninsula reachable only by longtail boat, and a world climbing destination. Four islands and Phi Phi — reef and beaches within an hour by boat. Hot springs and mangroves inland — a jungle interior most visitors never see.

The character

Krabi province is defined by karst: limestone laid down in shallow Permian seas, uplifted and eroded into towers that stand in the water and rise straight out of the mangroves. Railay, a peninsula cut off from the mainland by cliffs, became one of the world's great climbing destinations in the 1990s — hundreds of bolted routes on overhanging limestone, reached by longtail boat and nothing else.

The province holds several distinct places under one name. Krabi Town is a working provincial capital on a river with a night market and no beach. Ao Nang is the resort strip with the boats. Railay is the climbing and beach peninsula. And the islands offshore — Phi Phi, Hong, Chicken, Poda — carry the day-trip traffic, which has grown enormously; Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was closed entirely from 2018 to 2022 to let the reef recover, and now admits limited numbers with no boats anchoring inside. It is a case study in a coast learning its limits.

Places of character

Railay — East and West beaches, the Phra Nang cave with its shrine, and the climbing walls above. Tonsai — the climbers' beach next door, cheaper and more committed. Four Islands tour — Chicken, Tup, Poda and Phra Nang, with a sandbar walk between two at low tide. Maya Bay — reopened with strict limits; go early and accept that the queue is the price. Klong Thom hot springs and Emerald Pool — inland jungle, spring-fed pools in the forest. Krabi Town night market — the province's actual life, on the river, with excellent southern Thai food.

The way to do it

Base at Ao Nang or Railay rather than the town, but visit the town for the market. Take boat trips on the first departure — the sites are transformed by ten. Try climbing even as a beginner; the schools at Railay are good and the rock is forgiving. And go inland one day for the springs and the mangroves.

One perfect day

Longtail from Ao Nang to Railay at seven, the cliffs still in shade. An hour's climbing on a beginners' wall above the beach, then the walk through to Phra Nang with the cave shrine and the stalactites hanging over the sand. Swim. Boat out to the four islands before the fleet, wading the sandbar at low tide. Lunch on board. Afternoon inland to the Emerald Pool in the forest, thirty-two degrees and clear. Back for sunset drinks on Railay West with the karst going black against the sky, and dinner of massaman curry.

Grand hotels

Rayavadee — on the Phra Nang headland, pavilions between the cliffs and three beaches. Phulay Bay Ritz-Carlton Reserve — north of Ao Nang, the province's most expensive address.

When to go

Best expression: December to March — dry, calm seas and reliable boat days. Consider: November, at the end of the rains, green and quiet before the season. Avoid if possible: May to October, the southwest monsoon, when island trips are often cancelled.
