The Rows are continuous galleries running at first-floor level above the street shops, unique to Chester and dating from the thirteenth century — nobody has established with certainty why they were built. The city also keeps the most complete Roman and medieval walls in Britain, a two-mile circuit, and the largest Roman amphitheatre yet found in the country.
