Mérida
White City of Yucatán
Portrait
The Spanish founded Mérida in 1542 on the Maya city of T'hó and used its dismantled pyramids as building stone — the cathedral, the oldest on the American mainland, is made of them. Nineteenth-century henequen fortunes built the mansions along the Paseo de Montejo, and Maya is still spoken by a large minority of the state.
